How to choose an air compressor — 2026–2027
A compressor powers air tools — impact wrenches, spray guns, nailers, blow guns — and inflates tyres. You choose the right one by the tool that uses the most air.
Air delivery (l/min)
The key figure is the amount of air per minute. Check your tools’ air consumption and choose a compressor with about 30–50 % in reserve. Note that the intake figure is often quoted; the real output is usually about a third lower. Spray guns, sanders and impact wrenches use a lot of air; nailers and blow guns use little.
Tank and pressure
The tank stores air and smooths the pressure. 24 l is enough for tyres, blowing and a nailer, 50 l for a home workshop, 100 l and up for a garage and spray painting. Most tools run at 6–6.3 bar; a compressor’s maximum is usually 8–10 bar.
Oil or oil-free
Oil-lubricated compressors are quieter, last longer and handle long runs. Oil-free ones are lighter, need no servicing and suit short jobs. Belt-driven compressors wear more slowly than direct-drive ones and are built for daily use.
Air preparation
Spray painting needs a water and oil filter; air tools need a lubricator. A pressure regulator gives each tool the right pressure. Drain the condensate from the tank regularly.

Frequently asked questions
Which compressor do I need for an impact wrench?
One with at least a 50 l tank and a real output above the tool’s air consumption; check the impact wrench’s details.
Can I plug a compressor into a household socket?
Most home compressors run on 220 V. Powerful industrial models may need 380 V; check the product details.
Why drain the condensate?
Water in the tank rusts it and gets into your tools.
