How to choose a welding machine: MMA, MIG/MAG or TIG — 2026–2027
You choose a welder by the welding method and the metal. A simple inverter is enough for home and building work; car bodies, stainless steel and aluminium need other machines.
MMA: stick welding
An MMA inverter is the simplest and most common welder. It welds steel with an electrode and works outdoors, even in wind. It suits fences, gates, structures and repairs. A 160–200 A machine is enough for 2–4 mm electrodes.
MIG/MAG: wire welding
A MIG welder feeds the wire itself and welds fast and clean, especially thin sheet and car bodies. It works with shielding gas or with flux-cored wire (no gas). Many machines are combined, MIG + MMA.
TIG: the finest welds
TIG welding gives the cleanest, neatest welds on stainless steel and thin metal. Aluminium needs an AC/DC machine. It takes more practice than MMA and MIG.
Which numbers to look at
The current range (A) decides the metal thickness. The duty cycle (%) shows how long the machine can weld without a break. Check that it runs on 220 V household mains and copes with voltage drops. Do not forget an auto-darkening helmet, gloves and good cables.

Frequently asked questions
Which welder is best for a beginner?
A 160–200 A MMA inverter: it is simple, cheap to keep and handles most steel work.
Can I weld without gas?
Yes, with electrodes on an MMA machine or with flux-cored wire on a MIG welder.
What helmet do I need?
An auto-darkening helmet is the most convenient: it darkens by itself when the arc strikes, so you see the weld without lifting it.
Where can I find electrodes and consumables?
In the Welding accessories & consumables section of the website and in the Areg Tools shops in Yerevan.
