How to choose a laser level (line laser) — 2026–2027

Updated November 2026. The advice holds for 2027 as well.

A line laser replaces the spirit level and chalk line: it projects straight lines on walls and floors for tiling, drywall, furniture and electrical work. The choice depends on where and over what distance you will work.

Number of lines

A cross-line laser (2 lines) is enough for hanging pictures and shelves and for tiling. 3×360° or 4D lasers project lines around the whole room — walls, floor and ceiling at once — which suits renovation pros. For large areas and outdoor work there are rotary lasers.

Green or red

A green beam looks about four times brighter to the eye than red and is easier to see in a bright room. Red runs longer on one charge. Indoors, in good light, green is more convenient.

Accuracy and range

Accuracy is given in mm/m; ±0.3 mm/m is very good. The range without a receiver is usually 15–30 m; with a receiver (detector) it is 50–100 m or more, even in sunlight. Self-levelling (a magnetic pendulum) levels the laser quickly and warns you if it is tilted too far.

Tripod, mount, receiver

A tripod or wall mount puts the laser at any height. A receiver is needed outdoors and over long distances. Tripods, staffs and receivers are in their own sections.
