How to choose a sander: random orbit, orbital, belt — 2026–2027

Sanders differ by job: one strips old paint fast, another leaves a smooth surface for varnish, a third reaches into corners. The right sander and the right sandpaper save hours.

Random orbit

A random-orbit sander is the most versatile: it spins and oscillates at once, so it sands fast without leaving swirl marks. A 125 mm pad suits most jobs, 150 mm suits large surfaces. A large orbit (4–5 mm) removes material fast; a small one (2–3 mm) gives a fine finish.

Orbital and delta

An orbital sander with a rectangular pad sands right into corners and is good for finishing flat surfaces. A delta (triangular) sander is small and reaches tight spots such as window frames and stairs.

Belt, drywall sanders and planers

A belt sander removes material fastest: old paint, uneven spots, large boards. A wall and ceiling sander sands drywall and plaster. A power planer takes wood down to size, for doors and boards.

Sandpaper and dust

Start with a coarse grit (40–80) and work up to fine (120, 180, 240) without skipping steps. The holes in the paper should match the holes in the pad. Connect the sander to a workshop vacuum: the paper lasts longer and the room stays clean.
