How to choose a power saw: circular, jigsaw, reciprocating, mitre — 2026–2027

You choose a saw by the cut: straight, curved, demolition or a precise angle. Each kind does its own job best, and a workshop often needs two different saws.

Circular and mitre saws

A circular saw cuts boards, chipboard and plywood fast and straight. The depth of cut matters: a 165–190 mm blade cuts about 55–65 mm deep. A mitre saw cuts precise angles for skirting, frames and laminate.

Jigsaw

A jigsaw cuts curves and cut-outs in sheet materials. Pendulum action speeds up cutting in wood, and a tool-free blade clamp saves time. Blades differ for wood, metal and laminate.

Reciprocating and band saws

A reciprocating saw is a demolition tool: it cuts pipes, wood with nails and branches. Band saws and table saws belong in the workshop and give the most precise, repeatable cuts.

The blade matters most

A good saw with a poor blade cuts poorly. A blade with few teeth cuts fast but rough; one with many teeth cuts slower but clean. There are separate blades for wood, laminate, aluminium and steel. Work with a vacuum, for a clean room and your health.
