How to choose a drill, hammer drill or rotary hammer — 2026–2027
Drilling tools look alike but are made for different jobs. The wrong choice either slows the work down or wears the tool out fast. Here is how to choose right the first time.
Three kinds, three jobs
A drill-driver is for wood, metal and plastic, and it also drives screws. A hammer drill adds a light hammer mode for brick and small holes in concrete. A rotary hammer (SDS-plus or SDS-max) really hammers: it drills concrete fast and can also chisel off tiles and plaster. If you often work with concrete, take a rotary hammer, not a hammer drill.
Cordless or corded
A cordless tool is handy on site and wherever there is no socket. A corded one never runs flat and suits long, heavy work. If you already own batteries of one brand, choose a tool of the same platform so the batteries fit.
Which numbers to look at
Torque (Nm) shows how hard the tool turns a screw: 30–50 Nm is enough at home, 60 Nm and up for building work. The chuck is 10 or 13 mm; 13 mm takes bigger bits. For a rotary hammer the key figure is impact energy (J): 2–3 J is enough for electricians and plumbers, 5 J and up for heavy demolition.
Bits and accessories
The right bit matters as much as the tool: wood, metal and masonry bits are different. A rotary hammer needs bits and chisels with an SDS-plus or SDS-max shank. Bit sets, screwdriver bits and adapters are in Accessories & bits.

Frequently asked questions
Can a hammer drill replace a rotary hammer?
For a few holes, yes. If you drill concrete often or need holes over 10 mm, a rotary hammer is faster and tires your hand less.
What battery capacity do I need?
2–3 Ah is light and enough for driving screws; 4–5 Ah runs longer and is good for drilling and heavy work.
Where can I see the tools?
