How to choose a ladder: stepladder, extension, multi-purpose — 2026–2027
You choose a ladder by the height you need to work at and by the place: a flat, a warehouse, a facade or electrical work. The right ladder makes the job quick and safe.
Types
A stepladder stands on its own, for the home and the shop. An extension ladder (two or three sections) leans against a wall and reaches high, for roofs and facades. A multi-purpose ladder works as a stepladder, a leaning ladder and a work platform. A stepladder with a platform lets you work for long with both hands free.
Height
You work comfortably about a metre above the step you stand on. Do not stand on the top steps of a stepladder. A leaning ladder should rise about a metre above its support point, and its foot should be about a quarter of its height away from the wall.
Material and load
Aluminium ladders are light and do not rust. For electrical work choose fibreglass ladders, which do not conduct electricity. Check the maximum load: count your weight, your tools and the material.
Safety
Check for non-slip rubber feet, ribbed steps and solid locks on a stepladder. The European EN 131 marking shows the ladder has been tested. Always stand the ladder on a level, firm base.
