How to choose an impact wrench or impact driver — 2026–2027
Impact tools turn with short, strong blows, so they free seized fasteners easily and do not twist your wrist. It is important to tell an impact wrench from an impact driver.
Impact wrench or impact driver
An impact driver has a 1/4" hex chuck for bits: it drives long screws into wood and metal fast. An impact wrench has a square drive (usually 1/2") for sockets: it tightens and loosens nuts on wheels, structures and machinery.
How much torque you need
150–200 Nm is enough for an impact driver. For car wheels a 300–400 Nm impact wrench is enough; for trucks and rusted bolts you need 1000 Nm and up (3/4" or 1"). Several speed and power modes help you avoid overtightening small fasteners.
Cordless or air
A cordless impact wrench needs no compressor and is handy on the road and on site. An air impact wrench is light, cheap and durable but needs a strong enough compressor; check the air consumption (l/min). Garages often use both.
Impact sockets only
Use only impact sockets (black, Cr-Mo) with an impact wrench; ordinary chrome sockets can crack. Finish wheel nuts with a torque wrench at the torque the car maker specifies.
