How to choose a tile cutter: manual or electric — 2026–2027

You choose a tile cutter by the tile size and material. Ceramic tiles are easy to cut with a manual cutter; thick porcelain, large slabs and complex cuts are better done with an electric one.

Cutting length

The cutting length must be longer than your largest tile, and longer than its diagonal for diagonal cuts. For example, cutting 60×60 cm tiles diagonally needs a cutter of about 85 cm or longer.

Manual tile cutter

A manual cutter scores the tile with a hard wheel and then snaps it. For porcelain a rigid frame and a strong breaker matter. The wheel diameter depends on the material: smaller for soft ceramic, larger for hard, thick porcelain. The wheel is a consumable and can be replaced.

Electric tile cutter

An electric tile cutter cuts with a water-cooled diamond blade, without dust or chipping. It suits thick porcelain, natural stone, narrow strips, L-shaped cuts and 45° cuts.

Holes and small cuts

Holes for pipes and sockets are made with diamond core bits; small curved cuts with an angle grinder and a diamond blade. Wear glasses and a mask: tile dust is harmful.

Can a manual cutter cut porcelain?

Yes, if it is made for porcelain, with a rigid frame and a strong breaker. For very thick slabs an electric cutter is better.

Why does the tile break off the line?

Usually the wheel is worn or the pressure is uneven. Replace the wheel and score once without going over it again.

How do I cut at 45°?

With an electric tile cutter whose table or head tilts to 45°.
