How to choose a tool set for home and car — 2026–2027

You choose a tool set by what is in it, not by the number of pieces. A 100-piece set can be 60 bits and a couple of spanners, while a 40-piece set can be exactly what you need.

For the home or the car

A home set needs screwdrivers, bits, pliers, a hammer, a tape measure and a few spanners. For a car the essentials are sockets with a ratchet, combination spanners, deep sockets for spark plugs and long studs, and Torx and hex bits.

Socket drive sizes

1/4" sockets are small, 4–14 mm, for tight spots. 3/8" is the middle and most versatile size. 1/2" is the strongest, 10–32 mm, for wheels and large nuts. A good set has several drive sizes, extensions and a universal joint.

Quality

Good tools are made of chrome-vanadium (Cr-V) or chrome-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) steel. 6-point sockets grip a nut better and do not round its corners like 12-point ones can. A fine-tooth ratchet (72 teeth or more) works in tight spots with small swings.

Case

A sturdy case with a place for every tool shows at once what is missing. Large sets also come in foam trays for tool trolleys.

Frequently asked questions

What socket sizes do I need for a car?

Mostly 8–19 mm; wheels usually need 17, 19 or 21 mm on a 1/2" drive.

Which is better: 6-point or 12-point sockets?

6-point for tight and rusty nuts; 12-point fit more easily in tight spots.

Can I use the set’s sockets with an impact wrench?

No, an impact wrench needs special impact sockets.

Where can I buy one in Yerevan?

In the two Areg Tools shops or on the website with delivery in Yerevan.
