How to choose an angle grinder — 2026–2027

The angle grinder is one of the most used tools in any workshop. It cuts metal, stone and tile and cleans welds and rust. The right choice starts with the disc size.

Disc size

Grinders for 115 and 125 mm discs are light and suit most repair, cutting and grinding jobs. 150 mm sits in between. 180 and 230 mm machines are heavier but cut deep: they are for thick metal, pipes and concrete. If you are buying your first grinder, 125 mm is the most versatile choice.

Power and speed

Small grinders usually have 800–1400 W, large ones 2000 W and more. Variable speed helps for sanding and polishing, where a low speed is needed.

Safety features

A soft start stops the grinder from jerking when switched on. A restart lock keeps it from starting by itself when the power comes back. A kickback stop shuts it off if the disc binds, protecting your hands. Always work with the guard and side handle on, and wear glasses and gloves.

Discs

Cutting discs are thin (1–1.6 mm) and cut fast. Grinding discs are thick, for welds. Flap discs smooth the surface, and diamond blades cut stone, tile and concrete. Always check that the disc is rated for a higher speed than the grinder.
