How to choose garden tools: lawn mower, trimmer, chainsaw — 2026–2027

You choose garden machines by the size of the plot and the job. For a small garden electric tools are light and quiet; for a large plot or woodland, petrol ones.

Petrol, corded or cordless

Petrol machines are the most powerful and need no socket, for large plots and heavy work, but they need fuel and servicing. Corded ones are light, quiet and inexpensive but limited by the cable. Cordless ones are quiet, wire-free and run on the batteries of the same brand’s tools.

Lawn mower and trimmer

Choose a mower by its cutting width: 32–38 cm for a small lawn, 42–46 cm and up for a large one. A grass box and height adjustment matter. A trimmer cuts where the mower cannot reach, along fences and around trees: a line trimmer is for grass, a brush cutter with a blade for tall grass and scrub.

Chainsaw

For home and garden a saw with a 30–40 cm bar is enough for branches and firewood. Felling trees needs a more powerful petrol chainsaw with a 45 cm bar or longer. A chain brake and easy chain tensioning matter. Always wear a helmet, glasses, gloves and protective clothing.

Hedge trimmers, blowers and more

Choose a hedge trimmer by blade length and tooth gap, for thin or thick branches. Leaf blowers, shredders and pumps are in the catalogue too, along with spare chains, trimmer line and protective gear.
